10 things to consider for sustainable landscaping
Sustainable landscaping is the process of working with the environment where you design landscapes that is in tune with the weather conditions
It needs no other resources such as organic minerals or any other soil nutrients.
There are many different levels of sustainable landscaping, the best way to get involved is to just start somewhere by setting short and long term goals.
A modest aim could be having the compost bin.
A long-term goal could be to create a more self-sustaining garden that involves all aspects of healthy plant care such as choosing appropriate plants as well as eliminating chemical solutions.
You can follow these ten tips for a sustainable landscape of your dream garden:
1. Compress your yard
Your big space of green grass eats up a huge chunk of your resources.
Minimize your lawn and invest in a more natural garden.
You’ll save on water and your use of your fertilizers.
Also you don’t need to mow a lot.
2. Gather Rain Water
Accumulating rain in barrels helps in the conservation of water.
Rain water is soft and pure and requires no treatment.
You can even use it for drinking consumption.
3. Use a protective cover like mulch.
Ground covers like mulch, boosts your garden features.
But more than importantly, mulch protects the plants’ root systems and adds nutrients to the soil.
Mulch slows soil erosion, retains moisture and helps to prevent weeds.
You’ll spend less time weeding and watering your garden and more time enjoying it.
4. Go for compost
Composting natural waste produces humus which improves your garden soil.
By composting you minimize your garbage wastes, thus lessening the greenhouse gases.
You also save money on chemical fertilizers.
5. Plant the natives
Native plants are better able to withstand drought conditions and poor soil.
They are also better able to resist pests and diseases, thus reducing the need for harmful chemicals.
6. Lure those pollen agents
Try to plant different genus plants in your garden to attract many other wildlife varieties.
Insects like honey bees, honey eaters and vertebrates like lizard and rodents enriches the ecological system by carrying pollen in plants in the process of fertilization.
7. Shade trees help
Consider deciduous leaf shrubs near your home to cut your electricity bills in summer season.
Deciduous trees drop their foliage in fall and this allows more sunshine in your house.
In addition trees helps minimize harmful effects in climate by producing oxygen which then moderates ground temperatures.
8. Plant Edible Ornamentals
You can produce a beautiful landscape as well as tasty food for the table by integrating edible plants into your garden.
You can blend in with the ornamental shrubs some scarlet beans, spinach beets, and artichokes.
9. Use natural materials
Instead of using extraneous resources why not consider using natural rocks, reprocessed bricks and salvageable stones from demolished structural sites.
10. Use alternative power gears
You can switch to a reel lawn mower from a power mower.
Instead of a string weed trimmer use hand shears, a scythe or a hoe.
Instead of a gas blower for leaves, use a rake or broom, or better still allow leaves to remain in place to decompose and add nutrients to the soil.
Instead of a lawn, think about creating a meadow.

Having a rain barrel can help you collect enough of water during the rainy season. Learning how to make a rain barrel can help you reduce your water bills. For you to water your garden and the lawn, you need lots water which can cost a lot. Making a rain barrel is not expensive. That’s some of the best rain barrel information I’ve seen online. I tried to make a tutorial too, hope it helps.
a great tip is to water your lawn in the mornings or late evenings, not during the middle of the day
Native plants provide a beautiful, hardy, drought resistant, low maintenance landscape while benefiting the environment. Native plants, once established, save time and money by eliminating or significantly reducing the need for fertilizers, pesticides, water and lawn maintenance equipment.

Using mulch is a great way to reduce water loss due to evaporation, reduce weeds, minimize erosion, dust and mud problems. Mulch will also add nutrients to the soil when it decomposes. Grass cycling turf areas (using mulching mowers that leave grass clippings on the lawn) will also decrease the amount of fertilizer needed, reduce landfill waste and reduce costs of disposal
